WandaVision Episode 7: Filmnetic Review

0
105

After six weeks of mystery, secrecy, and misdirection, WandaVision finally starts to answer more questions than it asks. With a series of major reveals, major power-ups, and major moments overall, well, as Doctor Strange would put it, we’re definitely in the endgame now.

The seventh episode of WandaVision finally brings our favorite super family to the modern era. This episode takes inspiration from a few different modern sitcoms like Modern Family, The Office, and strangely enough, Happy Endings (a rather niche sitcom that ran on ABC from 2011-2013). Still, this episode seems to breakout of the sitcom illusion entirely with an ending that surely means there is nowhere to hide anymore.

Agnes’ (Kathryn Hahn) show stopping reveal as the classic comic witch Agatha Harkness may have been unsurprising to hardcore fans, but its execution is what made this an unforgettable episode. The way Marvel Studios managed to both reveal and tease the full extent of her powers provided the perfect amount of answers, but also new questions, that will keep us guessing until next week and beyond. It also doesn’t hurt that we got another incredible sitcom opening sequence based off The Munsters to reveal the true extent of Agatha’s influence.

The other major development in this episode that seems to be over shadowed a bit by Anges’ big moment was Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) finally getting her powers from the comic books. What seemed like an obvious next step for the show was very well executed with a breathtaking sequence of trippy VFX and nostalgic callbacks to Rambeau’s history in the MCU. Expect her powers to play more of a factor moving forward, and expect her to take on one of her many superhero names moving forward.

Still, even after so many reveals and developments for other characters, this still remains Wanda and Vision’s show. Elizabeth Olsen gets to play a Wanda that is closer to the edge than we’ve ever seen her. It was a brave choice on the part of everyone involved to make her decent into madness so convincing, even though it probably won’t last.

The reason her madness won’t last is actually one of the more subtle, yet incredible threads of the show. Monica’s similar experience with loss gives her the context and the empathy needed to bring Wanda back on track. While Wanda does not seem to budge yet, Rambeau does accomplish something more important: planting the seeds of doubt. Expect Wanda and Monica to have even more heart to hearts in the final two episodes of the show.

Vision (Paul Bettany) and Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) do manage to have an interesting side quest this episode. While their arc this episode provides most of the comic relief, Vision also goes through a journey of self discovery (literally) where he finds out what his final moments looked like outside of Westview. His dynamic with Wanda in the next few episodes will be the most interesting to keep an eye on because of his uncertain fate in both WandaVision itself and in the future of the MCU.

Overall, there’s not much to nitpick in this episode. I could mention how there are a ton of fans disappointed that Marvel did not give us the Reed Richards cameo that had been theorized for weeks, but it was never realistically going to happen, so it’s hard to fault the show for that. There are some interesting theories about this group of Rambeau loyalists within SWORD (possibly Skrulls?) that will be interesting to breakdown this coming week. Still, this episode was pretty flawless overall, and there’s not much left to do except sit and wait another week for Marvel answer a few more questions.

Malignant: Filmnetic Review

The best part of ‘ Malignant,’ by far, is its relentless insanity and unwavering devotion to its absurd yet wildly entertaining mystery.
